Day 55

Posted by Benjamin Stahl on February 22, 2016 at 12:00 AM Comments comments (0)

We slept in quite a bit in our comfortable bed. Our first task after getting up was making some coffee, which again was absolutely excellent. A short while later Shelia made us all a delicious breakfast of bacon and french toast; I was in heaven and ate way too much. After finishing up our late breakfast, David took Dar and I for 'a ride around the block,' as he called it. In reality it was about a 12 mile loop that took us through the surrounding country, all the while David told us about th...

After a good night of sleep, we woke up late and enjoyed a lovely breakfast that Mike and his mom prepared. Though we would have liked to stay longer we had to rush off after our late breakfast to meet with Dar's cousin, Shelia along with her husband, David at their home about an hour outside Houston in the country. When we arrived we were greated by Shelia and David, along with Shelia's mom, sister, and sister's husband. It was very nice ...

When we woke up we realized just how epic our spot was. We were parked on a clean and beautiful white sand beach, the weather was great, and we had no where we had to be anytime soon. We had found the perfect place for a vacation within our long term trip.

We awoke in the truck stop excited to celebrate the first road birthday of the trip; my 24th year. We quickly packed up and drove to our first stop: Denny's for a birthday grand slam because a free breakfast is a good breakfast. After that we drove into downtown San Antonio and parked the rig so we could walk around. Our first stop while walking was at the Alamo where we both learned a bit about Texas history.

Day 44

We slept in as much as we could at the hotel before checking out. The checkout process turned into quite the snafu; while we probably wouldn't have ever stayed at the Super 8 Hotel in Austin again, we now will make a point not to. After hitting the road we stopped by a grocery store to get a sandwich and some snacks before heading towards Hamilton Pool outside of Austin. After parking there and walking a short distance we reached the pool, and were blown away by its beauty.

We woke up a bit earlier today, knowing we had a lot we wanted to do. We made some breakfast and after eating we packed up and said our goodbyes to Lisa, we said goodbye to the kids the night before because they got up too early for us. Our first stop for the day was to get new tires; I made the one's we had last as long as I could, but it was time. We had some coffee while we were getting the tires on and concocted our game plan for the rest of the day. While we had originally been planning ...

Day 42

Today we slept in again, though not quite as much. We then made breakfast and got ready to head out. I had plans to go to UT Austin to meet a friend of a friend in the Astronomy department as well as chat with a few professors. While I did this Dar walked around downtown Austin, getting a feel for the area. The grad student I met, whose name is Ben as well, was very kind and showed me around the department for a little while before my first meeting. I loved that it was up on the 16th and 17th...

In the comfort of the bed, we slept in quite a bit. When I got up, I decided to go with Lisa to surprise her kids for lunch at their school. We went in during their lunch and pulled them out to eat in an annex with us. First up were her twins, Martina and Diego and then their older sister, Silvia. After lunch, Lisa and I walked back to the house, only a block away. Dar and I had some food of our own then, and then a short while later we walked back to the school and picked up Diego. After bri...

After waking up in the rest area, we made some breakfast and then rolled out. Our destination for the day was Austin, and we were hoping to get a visit to the gym in before getting to my cousin, Lisa's house. We passed a few hours in the car, and then arrived at a 24 Hour Fitness on the outskirts of Austin. After a thorough workout, we made it to Lisa's and arrived with perfect timing, as she had just arrived as well. We only stayed for about a half hour, hanging with Lisa, before we went wit...

Though it was windy, we did enjoy hanging out for a little bit before hitting the road.We drove back to Dallas after packing up camp, and made our first destination the Sixth Floor Museum in Dealey Plaza. Though we weren't allowed to take photos in the museum, we both thought it did an excellent job of presenti...

We slept in well, despite our air mattress deflating quite a bit in the night. After waking up, we went out to breakfast with Barney at a busy breakfast spot in Denton. I guess things really are bigger in Texas, because the portions here were insane. My meal consisted of friend potatoes, three eggs, Texas toast, and chicken fried chicken. I was amazed by how good the food was, and stuffed myself on only half of what was brought to me. Dar and Barney experienced similar outcomes. After finishi...

After sleeping in at the rest stop, we made some breakfast and coffee before hitting the road. Afterwards, we got back on the road towards Dallas. In Fort Worth we stopped at a 24 Hour Fitness, our first since Nevada! After a long work out and some time in the spa, we got back in the car to meet up with my friend Barney in Denton. We met him and his roommate at their house, and caught up for a bit before going out to Thai food with them and a few of their friends. Afterwards we went back to t...

After sleeping in and milking all we could out of our late check-out time, we got back in the car and hit the road.We spent a good portion of the day just trekking across Texas towards Dallas. We had made plans to stay with our friend Barney the next day, so we were aiming for a place to camp for the night. We found a free campsite in near Abilene using one of our normal websites, and as we pulled in we remarked at how beautiful it was. I...

We woke up briefly to say goodbye to Jazz and wish her well, and then fell back asleep. We managed to sleep until around 11 AM somehow, and then got out of the rig to have some coffee and breakfast. As we suspected, our surroundings were very beautiful. We packed up and then hit the road. The highway back to the interstate was beautiful in the daylight, and the intense winds made the g...

Though it may have been hard to see in the night time picture from the night before, the sky was quite clear when we went to bed. Though we expected some light rain in the morning, we were quite surprised when we woke up.Instead of rain, we got about 3 inches of fluffy snow! Fortunately we had packed up pretty well the night before in anticipation of rain, and so all our stuff was dry...

We woke up and made some coffee to go with more lasagna. As we were finishing up a trucker walked up and complimented us on our cooking set up, saying that we were 'professional travelers' and that he wanted to learn from us. We thanked him and showed him around our setup. Afterwards we hit the road, putting in some miles as we made our way East.Eventually, we arrived at Rock Hound St...

After waking up, we made breakfast and packed up a bit quicker because we wanted to spend the day at the Pima Air and Space museum. Their collection of planes was quite impressive. Highlights for me were seeing the SR-71 Blackbird, a number of planes decked out by artists, and some incredible helicopters. I also liked that we were able to spend time both indoors and outdoors. My only real complaint would be that we weren't allowed to go into any of the planes. At other airplane museums I have...

After a good night's sleep, we woke up and made breakfast. We took our packing up in camp before heading into Tucson. We went to a Safeway and did a major Cyber Cafe session at the Starbucks within the store. Afterwards we picked up a few things from the Safeway and decided to head back to the Snyder Hill BLM site that we stayed in the night before. The views on the road were again very beautiful.

In the morning we made coffee and had leftover quiche for breakfast. Aftwards we packed up and checked out of camp. We then made our way up the road to the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum. I'm glad we had all day, because we pretty much used all of it at the museum. There was just so much to see; from exhibits on geology, astronomy, dinosaurs, live animals, Arizona history, and much more. We were blown away by how much they had to offer and how well put together it all was. I would recommend thi...
